Softball: Maloney's four RBI spark Raiders' win

Erin Maloney drove in four runs with a pair of triples Tuesday, leading Mechanicville past Voorheesville, 5-2, in the quarterfinals of the Section II Class C tournament.

Maloney drove in Kim Thompson with a first-inning triple, and her three-run, three-base hit capped a four-run fifth that gave top-seeded Mechanicville a 5-0 lead. The Blackbirds rallied for two runs in the seventh, with Brianne Borter hitting an RBI single.

The 18-4 Lady Raiders advance to today’s 3 p.m. semifinal against Duanesburg. Voorheesville finished 11-9, with Amanda Gatt striking out 11 in her final varsity game, giving the Temple University-bound senior 975 for her career.

Fourth-seeded Duanesburg had Erika Kenney throw a two-hitter and also drive in a run with a single in beating Central Hudson Valley League champion Waterford-Halfmoon, 4-2.

Steph Rice had a single, drew two walks and scored a pair of runs for the 19-3 Lady Eagles.

Reigning state Class C champion Greenwich beat Lake George, 11-2, as Ashleigh Maines had five hits, including a triple. Alexis Case and Sarah Heimbach both had a double and single, and Mariah Linnett hit a pair of singles for the 19-3 Witches, the No. 2 seed.

Freshman Emily Padalino singled home Carylann Geddes with the winning run in the eighth inning as third-seeded Albany Academy edged Hoosic Valley, 2-1. Geddes also had an RBI single as the Bears avenged last year’s 1-0, 10-inning semifinal loss, and advanced to today’s semi against Greenwich.

Courtney McDonnell and Kelly Barkevich both slugged two-run home runs as No. 1 Shenendehowa eliminated Schenectady, 13-2, in the Class AA quarterfinals.

Brooke Zeller and Kelly O’Gorman both added a single and double and scored three runs for the Lady Plainsmen, who play Bethlehem in today’s semifinals.

Kelly Lane fired a one-hitter and struck out nine as No. 2 seed Col­onie beat Ballston Spa, 2-0, in another “AA” quarterfinal. Kassidy Ogren and Stephanie Reinhardt both hit RBI singles for Colonie, which gets Guilderland in today’s semis.

Adrian Shufelt homered with two out in the seventh inning, giving top-seeded Troy a 4-3 win over Glens Falls in a Class A semifinal.

Victoria Hallett had a pair of doubles, and Lexi Lewis had an RBI double for Big 10 champion Troy, which saw eighth-grader Hunter Levesque throw a six-hitter with 16 strikeouts.

Raychel Bariteau singled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Briana Matazinsky threw a no-hitter as second-seeded Tamarac edged Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons, 3-2, in a Class B quarterfinal.

Joelle Salisbury gave up four hits and struck out 10 for the Lady Knights.

Fourth-seeded Cohoes used a nine-run fourth inning to cruise past Hudson Falls, 19-0, in another “B” quarter.

Eighth-grader Isabelle DeChairo threw a two-hitter, and classmate Lily Sencer had four hits and drove in three runs for the 17-5 Lady Tigers, who advance to today’s semifinals against reigning state champ Chatham.

The Lady Panthers beat Ichabod Crane, 4-0, behind Kayla Doty’s one-hitter.

Ange Stephano homered and drove in two runs, and Kristin Hannay also knocked in a pair of runs as Loudonville Christian School topped Fort Edward, 7-2, in a Class D quarterfinal.

The second-seeded Lady Eagles will play No. 3 Germantown in today’s semis. The Lady Clippers beat Argyle, 18-9, scoring 10 runs in the ninth inning,

Morgan Wicks threw a four-hitter and struck out 11 as Hartford advanced to the “D” semis by beating New Lebanon, 5-0. Gwenn Harsha and Sarah Bowen both went 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Lady Tan­agers,
