— A new bicycle and pedestrian crossing between the Railroad Run Trail and Spa State Park will open Saturday.

A 9 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned to dedicate the crossway across Route 50, near its intersection with West Avenue.

A crossway has been installed in recent months by the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. It offers a crossing point from the Railroad Run trail — an off-road trail running from West Circular Street — to a newly constructed paved path in the park.

There will be a pedestrian-activated traffic light that will allow bicyclists and pedestrians to stop traffic and cross. Callanan Industries Inc. installed the $181,000 traffic signal, which will blink yellow unless it is activated.

Saratoga PLAN, the land conservation and trail development group, said the project has been 10 years in the making.

Why should pedestrians and bicyclists be required to push a button?
I don't recall ever driving my car and having to get out to press a button to get through any intersection. Shouldn't we expect better use of technology?
finally, $181,000 ???
