School track: Urys, Ferguson each triple at Group 5 meet

Mekeel Christian Academy’s Jake Urys and Canajoharie’s Seth Ferguson each won three events at the Group 5 championship Saturday.

Urys took the 400 in 54.35, the 800 in 2:08.61 and the 1,600 in 4:51.28. Ferguson won the 110 hurdles (16.20), 400 hurdles (1:00.83) and triple jump (39-8).

Berne-Knox-Westerlo won the boys’ title with 111 points, with Duanesburg second with 105. In the girls’ competition, Middleburgh took the team title with 125 points, topping Canajoharie’s 106.

Middleburgh’s Amanda Roney and Shania Marotta both won two field events.

Roney won the high jump (5-0) and long jump (15-7), while Marotta swept the throws with a 31-71⁄4 in the shot put and a 95-6 in the discus. Duanesburg’s Maddy Kenyon won the 200 (27.00) and 400 (1:00.88).

The Group 4 championship is not yet completed, as winds were too rough for the pole vault, which will take place Tuesday.

Through 18 events, Maple Hill leads both the boys’ and girls’ competitions, though the Greenwich boys are just four points behind. The Greenwich girls are 25 back.

Jeremy Spiezio won the 800 (2:02.61), 1,600 (4:29.74) and 3,200 (9:33.14) for the Witches. Greenwich also got wins from Lucas Whitehouse in the long jump (19-7) and triple jump (40-5) and Will McFee in the shot put (51-1⁄2) and discus (154-6).

Lake George’s John Ferrone was a double winner in the 200 (24.102) and 400 (52.93), edging 100 winner Corey Welch of Watervliet by 0.002 seconds in the 200.

Madeline Montague of Greenwich won the 1,500 (5:00.47), 3,000 (10:27.73) and 2,000 steeplechase (7:45.92).

Corinth’s Rachelle Lyford won the girls’ 100 (13.29) and 200 (27.61), and Stillwater’s Leah Moran took the long jump (17-1) and triple jump (34-21⁄2).

Friday, Isabella Borini recorded wins in the 100 hurdles (16.37), high jump (5-1) and long jump (15-61⁄4) to help Schalmont’s girls win the Group 3 championship with 78 points.

Schuylerville was second with 61 points, aided by Ashley Watson’s wins in the 3,000 (10:42.45) and 2,000 steeplechase (7:38.70). Brianna Blunck won the 200 (26.60) and 400 (1:01.43) for Coxsackie-Athens.

Chatham won the boys’ Group 3 title with 142 points, far ahead of Fonda-Fultonville’s 94. Schalmont’s Devon Willis won the 110 hurdles (15.04) and triple jump (46-6), while Chatham’s Ross Wightman took the pole vault (12-0) and 3,000 steeplechase (10:03.85).
