Schoharie County Arts Council to fold after 39 years
COBLESKILL Members of the Schoharie County Arts Council voted to fold the organization at the group's annual membership meeting Thursday night.
The move was recommended by the council's Board of Directors based on steadily declining state, local and private funding over the past five years, according to a news release from the nonprofit group.
The council has supported the fine and performing arts for 39 years, but less funding led to staff and facility reductions. The reduction of council staff to part-time status prompted the New York State Council on the Arts to transfer the responsibility for administering its programs to the Greene County Arts Council.
Cutbacks also forced the council to move from its gallery at 107 Union St. in Cobleskill into a smaller gallery at 108 Union St., then to an office in the nearby Head Start Building before finally giving up that space.
With neither staff nor facilities, board members said the group could no longer fulfill its mission, but is hopeful the void will be filled by other existing organizations.
