Baseball: Holmes' slam opens door for Duanesburg victory
Duanesburg managed just three hits, but one was a game-tying grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning, and another was Shane Barberis’ single that led to the game-winning run as the
Eagles beat Canajoharie, 7-6, in the Section II Class C tournament on Tuesday.
Canajoharie led, 6-0, before Duanesburg scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and four in the seventh.
The Eagles were one strike away from being eliminated when Henry Holmes hit a grand slam, set up by three walks to load the bases.
In the eighth, Kyle Baum walked, went to second on a passed ball and scored on an error after Barberis had singled.
The Eagles improved to 10-7.
Zach Ouderkirk hit a two-run homer for Canajoharie, which finished 13-8.
Zach Baldwin hit a three-run home run in the first inning, and that was all Stillwater needed to knock off third-seeded Lake George, 3-2.
Jon Brewster had two singles for the Warriors (10-8), and Liam Kane pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts.
Connor McCoy had eight strikeouts for Lake George (15-5).
Billy Pine threw a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts as Hoosick Falls got past Maple Hill, 1-0, despite a two-hitter by Maple Hill’s Tommy Miller.
Randy Tutunjian led off the bottom of the fifth with a double, and he came home on a single by John Curtis Whitman.
Pine gave up a single in the fourth, then retired the last 11 he faced as Hoosick Falls, which will play at Fort Plain on Thursday, improved to 15-6.
Maple Hill finished the season at 14-7.
Greenwich had to sweat one out against Hadley-Luzerne, scoring two runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Cody Sebast to win, 2-1, and improve to 19-2.
John Barnes came on in the seventh and gave up a leadoff single by Hadley-Luzerne, but he retired the side, including two strikeouts.
Hoosic Valley (19-2) defeated Whitehall, 11-2, as JT Sawyer had a double, single and five RBI, Jared Morello hit four singles and Frank Acker had a double and two singles in the Indians’ 15-hit offense.
Julian Barber hit a two-run homer in the first inning for Whitehall (10-9).
No. 10 seed Voorheesville had 19 hits and rolled past Schoharie, 16-3.
Nico Church led off the game with a home run and also had a double and two singles for four RBI.
Tommy Gallager had three hits and three RBI, including a two-run single that broke the game open.
The Mechanicville-Rensselaer game was rained out and will be played at 2:30 p.m. today at Rensselaer.
In Class AA, Guilderland barely got past Ballston Spa, 1-0, to give coach Doug LaValley the 150th win of his career.
The Dutchman (10-11) scored in the bottom of the fifth when Joe Bender doubled and came home on a sacrifice fly by Zach Formica.
Formica preserved the win by throwing out Anthony Monaco at the plate from right field to end the game.
Lewis Lima hit two singles, and Cory Moore hit a triple for Guilderland.
Ballston Spa ended the season at 10-11.
In Class B, Ben Brown gave up two hits in 11 innings as Albany Academy defeated Broadalbin-Perth, 2-1.
The Cadets scored in the 11th on a throwing error.
Rory Flaherty led off with a walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nolan Duda and came home on a grounder to short by Eric Woods.
Trevor Fransesconi had an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to tie it at 1-1 and a single for the Cadets (12-9).
The Patriots ended the season at 11-9.
Johnstown gave up five runs in the top of the seventh and still managed to hang on for an 11-9 win over Cohoes.
The Sir Bills (14-7) had 17 hits, including two singles and a double by Danny Nellis, and double and single each from Joe Nellis and Adam Caputo and a double by Connor Rodecker, who also had three RBI.
Sean Conners had two singles and two RBI for Cohoes (10-11), and Kevin Napier had a triple and three RBI.
Fonda-Fultonville defeated Hudson, 4-1.
