Landfill solar plan under consideration

— The Saratoga Springs City Council is expected to vote tonight on a proposal for a solar project at its capped Weibel Avenue landfill.

If the contract is approved, SunEdison of Belmont, Calif., would build a solar park on the landfill site at no cost to taxpayers, and the city would buy credits from SunEdison for the solar power produced. By doing so, the city would lock in its energy costs for several years, said Finance Commissioner Michele Madigan.

“Energy prices are all over the board,” she said.

Dubbed Spa Solar Park, the 1- to 2-megawatt photovoltaic array may produce enough power to cover all the city’s electricity needs, Madigan said.
