Baseball: Marvell's no-hitter keeps Niskayuna in playoff chase

Niskayuna senior Casey Marvell faced one batter over the minimum in a no-hit performance, and the Silver Warriors kept their postseason hopes alive Thursday with a 3-0 Suburban Council win at Ballston Spa.

Marvell walked the second batter he faced, and Niskayuna erased the runner with a double play started by the right-handed pitcher. Marvell also hit a batter with two down in the seventh.

“He was pumping fastballs all day long, and in the middle of the game, he found his curve. That made him even tougher,” said Niskayuna coach John Furey. “He did a great job.”

Mike Landry had a double, single and an RBI for Niskayuna (5-8, 7-8), Tom Carrigan had a sacrifice fly, Garrett Whitley scored two runs and shortstop Zach Zebrowski had six assists and a putout.

Robbie Knightes had two singles and a two-run homer in the last of the eighth as Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake dealt Shaker its second loss in three days, 9-7.

Ryan McDonnell had two singles and three RBI for the Spartans

(8-5, 11-5), Danny Maynard collected a double, single and two RBI, and Dan Nuzzi added three singles. Tyler Hoffman clubbed a three-run homer for Shaker (9-4,

11-5), and Sean Egan’s two-run homer in the seventh created a 7-7 tie.

Matt Buckley went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI, Justin Yurchak went 2-for-3 with a double and Greg Geisel and Taylor Vav­eruick combined on a four-hitter as Shenendehowa (11-2, 14-2) blanked Saratoga Springs, 4-0.

James Apple hit a three-run triple in a nine-run, sixth-inning outburst that carried Averill Park over Col onie, 12-7.

Sam Beaulac had a double, two singles and two RBI for the Warriors (3-10, 4-12), and Greg Hotaling had a double, single and two RBI. Jeff Bink led Colonie (6-7, 8-8) with two doubles and a single.

Mike Luther and Ryan Henchey both launched a pair of home runs, Kevin Smith also homered, and Columbia beat Mohonasen at Memorial Park, 13-0.

Henchey went 3-for-4 with five RBI, Smith went 4-for-5 with a double, and Columbia’s Cody Piel pitched a three-hitter. Will Sanderson doubled for Mohonasen.

Patriots win

Schenectady put together a pair of four-run innings and held off Christian Brothers Academy, 8-6, to move within a win of a sectional playoff berth.

Schenectady scored four in the fourth and fifth innings to go up, 8-3. Zack DeThomasis belted a three-run home run for CBA in the seventh.

Jeremy Kent hit an RBI single and a sacrifice fly for the Patriots (7-5, 8-6), and Cody Shafer had a single and an RBI double. Jordan Bernacet added two singles.

DeThomasis had a triple and a double to go with his homer, and finished with four RBI.

Steve Curry had two singles and all three RBI for Catholic Central (5-9, 8-9) in a 3-2 Big 10 win over Amsterdam. Aylan Heatly hit a triple and single for the Rams (6-6, 8-7).

Nate Passino’s RBI single in the last of the seventh gave Greenwich (10-2, 15-2) a 2-1 win over Hoosic Valley in a game pitting Wasaren League leaders.

Cody Sebast walked and Jake Jennings doubled to set the stage for Passino’s game-winning hit. John Rooney hit an RBI single for Hoosic Valley (10-2, 16-2).

Cody Gaines hit a two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, capping a three-run rally and lifting Hoosick Falls past Tamarac, 3-2.

Sophomore Kealan Hitt went the distance for the Panthers (8-4, 12-5), scattering five hits in his second win in as many days. Jimmy Mariano had a double and single for Tamarac (2-9, 3-11).

Shawn McNeil had a double and a two-run homer, Jake McCumber picked up a pair of doubles and Liam Kane fanned seven in his fifth pitching victory as Stillwater (6-6, 7-7) downed Cambridge, 11-4.

Kyle Gibbs went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and a two-out, two-run triple in the eighth inning as Berne-Knox-Westerlo (4-10, 4-12) outlasted Galway, 9-8, in the Western Athletic Conference.

Ben Manna paced Galway (6-7, 6-9) with a triple, double, an RBI and a run scored.

Marcus Failing slugged a two-run, inside-the-park home run, Zach Sweet had two triples and a single and Chris Hanifin struck out 10 as Fort Plain (14-0, 15-2) defeated St. Johnsville, 14-4.

Hanifin improved to 6-1 on the mound while adding two singles. Dakota Nemecek also had two singles and three RBI for the Northern Division-leading Hilltoppers. John Vicciarelli had a triple, single and an RBI for the Saints (4-10, 6-10), and Dylan Klock and Brad Smith hit RBI singles.

Cam Coons hit a two-run double, Sean Hart had two singles and two RBI and Saratoga Catholic (12-1, 13-2) overcame a 10-2 deficit to beat Mekeel Christian Academy, 14-12, in eight innings.

Ohenio Miller had a double, single and three RBI for Mekeel (8-4, 9-6).

Greg Musk hit a single and a two-run triple and worked the seventh to save what Chris Amorosi started as Schalmont (9-4, 12-4) posted a 3-1 Colonial Council win at Albany Academy (7-5, 9-7).

Amorosi scattered four hits. Sean Dempsey broke up his shutout bid with an RBI single in the sixth.

Kevin Twardzik went 4-for-5 with a double, homer and seven RBI, Dan Valachovic also homered, and Fonda-Fultonville (6-6, 7-7) scored in every inning but the last in a 16-14 win over Voorheesville.

Nico Church went 4-for-5 with a double and five RBI to spark the Blackbirds (7-4, 11-5). Mike Young went 3-for-4 with a double, homer and four RBI.

Tyler Thompson drove in four runs with two doubles and a single, and Christian Hodson contributed three singles and two RBI as Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk (6-6, 7-10) beat Ichabod Crane, 14-9.

Nick Ferrari had three singles and three RBI for the Riders (6-7, 7-12).

Mitch Forshey went 2-for-4 with a double and a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the eighth as Scotia-Glenville rallied past Johnstown, 4-3, in the Foothills Council.
