College lacrosse: Danes win AE crown, get automatic NCAA bid
STONY BROOK Most Outstanding Player Lyle Thompson, a sophomore attack, recorded nine points on three goals and six assists to pace 12th-ranked University at Albany past University of Maryland Baltimore County, 19-10, in the America East Conference tournament championship game Saturday at LaValle Stadium.
The 13-4 Great Danes, who took home their fifth championship title in 11 years, find out their first-round NCAA tournament opponent tonight at 9. The selection show will be televised on ESPNU.
“We worked very, very hard, as hard as I have seen any team work, to get to this point,” said UAlbany head coach Scott Marr. “We felt relieved because when you are the top seed in your conference tournament, it is a relief when you come through as the No. 1 seed to win the championship.”
Thompson continues to climb the NCAA record book for points in a single season with 108. His season total is third best in NCAA history. Steve Marahol (114) of UMBC owns the all-time record.
Miles Thompson scored five goals, and Ty Thompson chipped in with three for the Great Danes.
“Offensively, myself, Miles and Ty were forcing too many shots and tried to set the tempo early,” said Lyle Thompson. “We told each other to settle down, don’t force passes that are not there. After a timeout, all three of us got together and knew that we set the tempo for the team, so we told each other to settle down and play our game.”
