Fox 23 morning meteorologist let go under merger

Text Size: A | A

It appears more layoffs have hit the recently merged television news operations of WXXA (Fox 23) and WTEN (News 10). WXXA meteorologist Jason Caterina announced in a Facebook post Friday morning that his job had been cut and Friday’s show was his last. “I guess it’s not official until it’s made Facebook official,” he wrote on his page. “I’ve really enjoyed bringing you the weather and more every weekday morning for the past few years, ...

I am willing to bet there will be even more reductions.

There have got to be more reductions. Collectively between WTEN and WXXA there are 19 anchor/reporters and 6 meteorologists. Compare that with WRGB/WCWN that has 11 reporter/anchors (they may add a couple) and 4 meteorologists. WNYT has 14 reporter/anchors and 4 meteorologists which will probably be enough when they take over WNYA and probably put on a 10 PM and perhaps other newscasts there. WNYT has 3.5 sportscasters where the others have just 2.

IMHO meteorology is just a lesser form of witchcraft. They should all be burned at the stake. A much more accurate method of weather prediction would be to hang a piece of yarn outside your window. If it's wet it's raining, moving around, must be windy, stiff as a board, too cold to go out......etc. As a side note, if you also include the witches and warlocks on payroll at YNN there are over 25 in the area.....and they still can't get it right.

"Daily" says that he or she liked Ann Hughes. And yes,I would say she had a good delivery. But I can understand where cuts had to be made with the merging of 2 news departments and they probably saved a lot of money. But here is the perfect opportunity for CBS6/CW15. Offer Ann Hughes a general assignment reporter position for now and when it comes time for Liz Bishop to retire, which isn't that far off, consider elevating Ann to Anchor. She knows the area and just think, she could be paired with Greg Floyd again.

They're all phonies. How come NOBODY reports about those lines in the sky? Upper atmospheric pollution from high flying jets...not a peep out of anybody. Why is that? Those persistent vapor trails morph into creepy looking wispy clouds and nobody notices. Nobody cares. Why don't meteorologists talk about the obvious haze in the sky caused by these jets? Why? I've heard them say the sky is clear, not a cloud in the sky and I've seen criss-cross white lines from jets high in the sky and I have to wonder just what the heck is going on. Jets flying way up high are polluting the upper atmosphere and nobody seems to care. Boy, are we in for a rude awakening!

Ann Hughes was a great asset. I hope she gets picked up by someone else in this area.

All this carnage goes back to the Reagan Administration and an FCC Commissioner named Mark Fowler who famously described television as "just a toaster with pictures"--in other words, just a commodity. He had no appreciation for the importance of communications, including mass communications, to a self-governing republic. Consequently, he and his most of his successors ended important safeguards like licensing based on an evaluation of public service responsibilities, equal time provisions, media concentration of control (i.e.: monopolization), etc. The current sorry state of our media is his sorry legacy. Most media outlets are so debt-laden that they no longer function (nor can they) at any reasonable level of responsibility. But-heh-a few lucky (though less than talented and public spirited) owners and performers have sure reaped their rewards for debasing the medium ever further.

Hey jfiglio1...

Very good. Yes I agree.
Brings back memories of that delinquent malfeasance named Watts. He alone was the greatest, deadliest threat to our American experience. I still admire Reagan and especially Nancy because I believe they were being used buy a greater power beyond their control. Nancy carried a handgun for a very good reason and probably still does. She loved and protected her Ronnie. BTY: it was a well know fact that she hated the Bushes with a passion.
