Behind the Broadcast: Dream weekend for hoop fanatics
News, notes and other thoughts as I plan to see the doctor some time next week to see if he can cure my case of March Madness.
u If you are a basketball fan, this is a wonderful time of year for you. Even the casual college basketball fan like myself can get caught up in the madness of March college basketball. Just watching the crazy ending of Thursday’s Atlantic 10 Conference first-round game between Charlotte and Richmond lures you to the TV. This is real reality TV.
This weekend is a great one for basketball fans at the high school and college levels because championships will be decided.
Let’s start with the high school games. The New York State tournament finals for the boys and girls will be on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel today and Sunday.
The boys’ games from the Glens Falls Civic Center will be on TWCS-50 (standard definition) and TWCS-1803 (high definition). Today’s schedule has the Class D final at 5 p.m., the Class C final at 7:15 and the Class B final at 9. On Sunday, the Class A final is at 1:30 p.m., and the Class AA final is at 3:15.
Robert Lee will handle the play-by-play. Tom Huerter is the analyst. Brian Sinkoff will anchor the coverage.
The girls’ finals from Hudson Valley Community College will be on TWCS-1. Today, the Class B final is at 4 p.m. the Class A final is at 7. and the Class AA final is at 8:45. On Sunday, the Class D final is at noon, and the Class C final is at 1:45.
Kevin Brown will call the play-by-play. Lorraine Schunck is the analyst.
Looking ahead to next weekend, TWCS-50 and 1803 HD will have the Federation tournament finals from the Times Union Center. The March 23 schedule has the girls’ Class A final at 3:15 p.m., the boys’ Class A final at 5, the girls’ Class AA final is at 6:45 and the boys’ Class final is at 8:30.
There are two Class B finals on March 24. The girls’ game is at
1 p.m., and the boys’ contest will be at 3.
On the college level, several conference titles will be decided this weekend. The big one of interest for the Capital Region is UAlbany playing at Vermont for the America East championship. ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD has the game at 11:30 a.m. It will also be on the radio on WOFX-AM (980).
Another highlight will be the final Big East tournament championship game, at least in the format that we know it. The game is tonight at 8:30 on ESPN and ESPN HD.
CBS6 (WRGB) and CBS6 HD will have two finals today. The Conference USA championship is on at 11:30 a.m., and the Mountain West final is at 6 p.m.
ESPN and ESPN HD will televise the Big-12 tournament final at 5:30 p.m. It will also have the Pac-12 tournament championship for the first time. It will be on at 11 tonight.
ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD has four other conference finals today — the SWAC at 4:30 p.m., the Mid-American at 6:30, the Southland at 8:30 and the Big West at 10:30.
ESPNU and ESPNU HD has three finals — the Mid-Eastern Athletic at 5 p.m., the Big Sky at 9 p.m. and the WAC at 11 p.m.
There are four finals Sunday. The ACC tournament is on ESPN and ESPN HD, as well as MY4 (WNYA) and MY 4 HD, at 1 p.m. ABC10 (WTEN) has the SEC championship at 1. CBS6 and CBS6 HD will have the Atlantic 10 final at 1, and the Big Ten championship at 3:30.
That will lead into the “NCAA Tournament Selection Show” at
6 p.m. on CBS6 and CBS6 HD.
u If you didn’t catch Rodger Wyland’s “Big Board Sportstalk” on WOFX Thursday morning, you missed former Manhattan and Seton Hall basketball coach Bobby Gonzalez, in effect, putting his name out there for the Siena basketball coaching opening.
Gonzalez claimed a couple of times during the interview that he wasn’t campaigning for the job, which became vacant when Siena fired Mitch Buonaguro on Tuesday. But Wyland told me that Gonzalez asked to be on the program. They did talk about the college basketball tournaments, but the timing is certainly odd.
It seems more like a desperate ploy by Gonzalez to get the Siena fans to think about him as a candidate. But I doubt it will work.
u Soccer fans will be in their glory today.
NBC Sports group will have a triple-header of Major League Soccer action. NBC13 and NBC13 HD will have D.C. United at New York at 12:30 p.m. NBC Sports Network and NBCSN HD will have two matches — Chicago at Kansas City at 3 and Portland at Seattle at 8.
At 8:30 this morning, ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD will have and English Premier League game between Manchester City and Everton.
And some other news for soccer fans. FOX Sports Media Group announced this week that it will televise all 25 matches of the CONCACAF Gold Cup this summer. Most of the matches will be on FOX Soccer, but FOX Sports will broadcast a match from the group stage, quarterfinal round (should the U.S. advance), along with the final on July 28.
WTMM-FM (104.5) will have the New York Yankees’ spring training game against the Philadelphia Phillies today at 1 p.m. That means another year of announcers John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman is upon us. You have been warned.
