Ballston Lake man admits being drunk, on LSD at time of head-on crash
BALLSTON SPA A 21-year-old Ballston Lake man under the combined influence of alcohol and LSD when the car he was operating hit another car head on last September pleaded guilty Thursday to a felony count of vehicular assault.
Terrence J. Rudes of 9D Windy Hill Road admitted in court that he was high on LSD and alcohol when the crash occurred Sept. 17, 2012, on Church Avenue in the village of Ballston Spa, said Saratoga County District Attorney James A. Murphy III.
Rudes pleaded guilty to second-degree vehicular assault before Judge Jerry J. Scarano in Saratoga County Court. He is expected to be sentenced May 16 to a prison term of as much as 3 years, Murphy said
Police said Rudes was heading north when he crossed the double yellow line on Church Avenue and crashed head on into another vehicle in the southbound lane causing serious physical injury to the other driver.
“I thought I could time travel and drive through (the other car). ... I wanted to see what would happen,” Rudes told police at the scene of the accident.
The driver of the other car broke her hand and is improving and continues rehabilitation to increase range of motion and flexibility, Murphy said.
“Despite our best efforts to prevent these crimes from occurring and educate the public about the dangers of mixing alcohol and drugs and driving, we continue to see people driving while impaired and causing death and serious injury,” Murphy said.
