— Police say a man whose threats against a Skidmore College student prompted a campus lockdown has been caught.

Saratoga Springs police say this morning that the suspect is in custody. Police say no other information will be released until a news conference scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said this morning that Lance C. Leonard, 49, with a last-known address of Cuttyhunk, Mass., allegedly made threats to harm a student and then himself.

Skidmore College was locked down Tuesday night after police advised the college of a “credible” threat made against a student by a man who might have been armed, according to an alert posted on the college’s website.

Late Tuesday, the campus was still in lockdown and no suspect had been located after several hours.

The suspect was described as a 49-year-old, white man, about 6-foot-1 and balding. The threat was made off-campus, and police said they had identified the man and were following leads to apprehend him prior to his arrival to campus.

“Saratoga Springs police will have a strong presence on campus and they will be monitoring traffic at the campus’s entrances,” according to the alert, which was posted at 8:40 p.m. “In the interest of safety, the campus will be closed with officers screening in-going and out-going vehicles and pedestrians.”

Employees and students were permitted to leave, but were advised they might not be able to return until the situation is resolved.

Leonard is known to be transient.
