Caffe Lena, brew pub seek permission from Saratoga Springs to expand
SARATOGA SPRINGS Two local businesses, one a longtime venue for folk music and the other a popular new brew pub, are seeking permission from Saratoga Springs officials to expand.
Caffe Lena at 47 Phila St., the legendary folk music coffeehouse that opened 53 years ago, wants to build a 775-square-foot, two-story addition onto the back of its building.
Susan Barden, senior planner for Saratoga Springs, said the addition would accommodate a stairwell and an elevator so the building complies with updated fire safety codes and accessibility issues. The Saratoga Springs Zoning Board of Appeals will discuss the Cafe Lena application at its March 11 meeting in City Hall.
Druthers Brewing Co., which opened at 381 Broadway in downtown Saratoga Springs last summer, is asking for approval of a 790-square-foot addition to its new brew pub that would be located along a portion of the pub’s large outdoor patio.
Kate Maynard, principal planner for Saratoga Springs, said the single-story addition would be in the back of the parcel adjacent to an adjoining building. Maynard said the plans show roll-up doors on the addition that would include a second bar and more seating, and a garden on the roof of the addition where herbs and greens would be grown.
The city Planning Board may discuss the Druthers site plans at its March 13 meeting in City Hall but the agenda hasn’t been finalized.
The city’s Design Review Commission will also review the Druthers plans because the project is in a downtown historic district.
