Spinners hand ValleyCats first loss of season
LOWELL, Mass. A trio of Lowell pitchers held the Tri-City ValleyCats to just two hits to shut them out in a 4-0 New York-Penn League game Friday night at Edward A. LeLacheur Park.
Starter Jamie Callahan threw five innings to pick up the win, allowing one hit, a double by Ernesto Genoves in the second inning. Callahan struck out three and walked two as the Spinners move to 3-1 on the season.
Ronnie Mitchell picked up the ValleyCats’ other hit, a single off reliever Kyle Martin. Martin went two innings, walking two and striking out one.
Greg Larson worked the last two innings and was perfect with three strikeouts.
The ValleyCats lost for the first time this season and dropped to 4-1, but they are still atop the Stedler Division, a half-game ahead of the Spinners.
Randall Fant took the loss, allowing all four runs on six hits in his four innings of work. Three relievers — Christian Garcia, Andrew Thurman and Zach Morton — combined for four shutout innings, allowing just one hit the rest of the way.
Lowell’s Manuel Margot, Kendrick Perkins and Reed Gragnani each doubled. Gragnani drove in two runs for the Spinners, who had dropped an 8-5 decision in the 11th inning to Tri-City the previous night.
Tzu-Wei Lin was 2-for-3 with a run, a stolen base and an RBI. Margot also drove in a run.
The teams will renew acquaintances tonight at 6:05.
