Baseball: Schalmont romps to 10-3 victory in regionals
Junior pitcher Greg Musk kept Beekmantown hitless through the first four innings and finished with a four-hitter to help Schalmont bounce Beekmantown of Section VII, 10-3, in a Class B regional baseball game Monday at SUNY-Plattsburgh.
The 20-4 Sabres face Ogdensburg Free Academy of Section X today at 4 p.m. at Bleecker Stadium in the regional championship game.
Schalmont couldn’t solve Beekmantown pitching until the Sabres erupted for six runs in the top of the sixth inning. Tyler Smith’s two-run pinch-hit single was the key blow.
John Pascarella added two singles, an RBI and two runs scored, while Chris Hamilton ripped a double and a single, plating one run.
Schalmont tacked on four insurance runs in the seventh inning.
“Through the first four innings, we had quite a pitchers’ duel,” said Schalmont coach Bob Anderson. “We had only one hit, and they had none. Their pitcher kept us off-balance. He had a good curveball working. We put the ball in play, but they made some good defensive plays.”
Anderson said his team, despite its youth, kept its poise in the batter’s box.
“I heard some of my players talking, and they were reminding each other that they were in the same spot against Catskill,” Anderson said. “They just focused the whole way. We finally caught some breaks and got some runs in.”
Anderson said that Musk threw another strong game.
“The last time out, he threw a no-hitter, and then he comes out today with four more no-hit innings. He was really dealing out there. He struggled with his control. He had a few walks mixed in, but we made some big defensive plays behind him, especially a big double play in the sixth inning after they got a two-run single.”
Musk walked five and hit a batter.
“We’re ready for the finals,” Anderson said. “We’ve got Jimmy Hamilton back on the mound, and although we knew Ogdensburg is a good team, we’re expecting a good game.”
The winner of today’s game advances to the state final four in Binghamton on Saturday.
