Cuomo stacking the deck to get casino gambling approved

Text Size: A | A

Cuomo stacking the deck to get casino gambling approved The upcoming referendum to amend the state constitution to allow up to seven gambling casinos has been subverted by Gov. Cuomo, turned into an ultimatum to all who oppose the amendment’s expansion of predatory gambling. Meant to paralyze opposition to the amendment from all quarters, Section 32 of the Upstate New York Gaming Economic Development Act of 2013, would, if the amendment lost, impose an unspecified ...

Barbara McBride, I'm sorry for your problem but two stabbings a report of shots fired, a gang assault and a man beating his girlfriend in front of his kids are the more important calls. You blame the police but they are given the calls by dispatch according to priority, it is a sad and unfortunate fact in a city that is at least 50 police officers short. Having dinner with a friend who happens to be a cop in Schenectady said " all we do is run from call to call, we can't even be proactive on the street". Did you know that every day multiple people call the police and say they want to hurt themselves because they don't feel well and they do this because they don't want to pay for a taxi to the ER. Guess what, two police cars have to respond and transport them to the hospital. If this city fixed the rules and laws like they raised the taxes the police would be more free to actually be police. Call the Mayor and tell him and the council to hire more cops and fix these laws that make cops taxi drivers. BTW last year I took my wife to the ER there were 8 police cars there, I thought an officer was shot, I saw a friend and he told me it was all citizen calls they had to transport to the hospital.

Barbara McBride-Surprised to read this with a self described "law enforcement expert" as Mayor. The problem with the police department is sitting in City Hall. Don't expect any improvements until a new Mayor and new Council majority take over. Police are not free ambulances. If the SFD was allowed to transport patients and bill a lot these issues would resolve themselves. The current system where the great SFD responds and then has to call Mohawk Ambulance must be amended.

@Joseph Hehir

You are rightly sick and tired of the focus on racism due to the media's fixation on the Trayvon Martin case. However, Sharpton and Jackson wouldn't be perceived as the voices for black America who stoke the flames of racism if the media didn't provide them with a platform to bloviate and dominate the conversation. Unfortunately, this editorial decision to examine and dissect every racial aspect of the TM trial proved to be a money maker for the networks. Serious issues that affect race relations such as the "Stop and Frisk" policy in NYC can't be packaged in a profitable manner for the masses, so those real issues on race relations are generally ignored. So long as the media makes a hefty profit giving Sharpton and Jackson a megaphone, the claim that America is divided by race will continue to be perpetrated by those two.

Ahmjrcpa1, talk to a liberal sometime and you'll understand why sleezeballs continually get re-elected. Liberal politicians like Cuomo have their legions of media lemmings and head in the sand voters that allow them to "rule". Democrats have transformed us from a representative republic into a banana republic. It wont change anytime soon in NY. All you can do is get out as soon as possible.

A 16 year old can get outside and mow lawns, rake leaves, do yard cleanups, trim hedges, watch pets, etc., and make a good amount of money without being hired by some business. I made quite a bit of money in High School doing this kind of work. Just takes a bit of personal initiative and physical effort.

BIWEMPLE: You are absolutely correct. As I toil in my driveway after each snowstorm, especially when school is dismissed, I NEVER am approached by kids to "help" with my driveway. Similar with raking leaves and mowing grass.

Several years ago a poor family lived nearby, and they ALL went out into the neighborhood doing exactly this. I guess its the "physical effort" part that is lacking.
