— The Malta Town Board will hold a special meeting on Monday, Aug. 19, to vote on zoning changes for a possible second GlobalFoundries computer chip plant in the Luther Forest Technology Campus.

The board last week laid out a schedule under which it would accept environmental impact statement findings on July 29, then on Aug. 19 hold a public hearing and take a final vote on whether to change zoning to encourage the new plant.

GlobalFoundries has said the plant they’re calling Fab 8.2 could be a $14.7 billion investment that creates nearly 2,000 more jobs, though the company has not made a commitment to build the plant.

In a series of workshops in recent months, officials from the town and GlobalFoundries have hammered out a number of issues, including reaching an agreement that GlobalFoundries will pay $3 million toward the town of Stillwater’s purchase of Brown’s Beach on Saratoga Lake, to be turned into a public beach.

They’ve also worked through how much money GlobalFoundries will contribute toward off-site traffic improvements and other issues.

Officials expressed relief that the process is ending.

“It’s been difficult. I think we’re tired and glad to be toward the very end,” said Councilman John Hartzell.

GlobalFoundries is growing, and Sen. Charles Schumer is encouraging exploratory talks between the company and Apple about future production of Apple computer chips.

“I’m looking forward to getting GlobalFoundries to make a commitment and seeing this happen,” said Councilman Peter Klotz.

GlobalFoundries currently employs about 2,000 people at its $7 billion Fab 8 plant, and is building a technology research center where about 1,000 will work starting late next year. If Fab 8.2 is built, total on-site employment would increase to nearly 6,700, according to the company.

The Stillwater Town Board also would need to approve the project, but officials there are letting Malta take the lead on the review.
