SummerNight will take over downtown Schenectady tonight from 5 to 10 p.m. on State Street between Broadway and Barrett Street and on the Jay Street Pedestrian Mall.

Parking and all musical performances and activities will be free, with the exception of circus performances and food. State Street will be closed to traffic from 2 to 11 p.m. between Nott Terrace and Broadway; Clinton and Lafayette streets will be closed at the approaches to Union Street.

"Schenectady County is so proud to once again bring SummerNight to Downtown Schenectady," said Cathy Gatta, chair of the County Legislature's Committee on Tourism, Arts, and Special Events. "This will be our best SummerNight yet, especially with the added addition of the Zoppe Family Circus."

The circus will hold performances all weekend long, starting at 7 this evening. Tickets can be purchased at the Proctors box office. The theme for this year's SummerNight is circus, and before their first show, the Zoppe Family Circus will parade down State Street at 6 p.m.

This is the eighth year the popular SummerNight event is being held. Family-friendly events will occur all night in the MVP Health Care Kids Korner. The Kids Korner this year features the Puppet People, Radio Disney Live!, face painters, balloon artists, caricaturists, heart healthy activities with the Schenectady Boys & Girls Clubs, hands-on activities from the Scotia-Glenville Children's Museum and the Museum of Innovation and Science, martial arts demos with Pai's Tae Kwon Do Academy, the Tri-City ValleyCats Fun Van and the Siena Saints Mobile Experience.

This year's music headliners, appearing on the GE Main Stage, will be Electric City Horns and Funk Evolution. Featured performers include the Tim Olsen Quintet. A magician, hypnotist, juggler and a sand artist are also event favorites.

Dozens of food vendors will line State Street with every food imaginable, including cotton candy, pizza, Italian Ice, Price Chopper's House of BBQ and Gwenie's Breakfast Wagon, just to name a few.

To finish off the night, a fireworks show, presented by Price Chopper, will be displayed around 10 p.m.

Schenectady County SummerNight is sponsored by GE, with presenting sponsors The Daily Gazette and Proctors.

"Bring your family and join your neighbors for a fun-filled evening of music, the performing arts and family-friendly activities," Gatta said.
