Ryan Canfield, age and address unavailable, faces one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a controlled substance and six counts of using a phone to commit a felony.

He was arrested in April and ordered held at the time. The indictment was handed up Wednesday.

Canfield is accused of conspiring to distribute the drug in the region from January to May 2012 and then using a phone to commit a felony on six occasions in January 2013.

According to an affidavit filed in the case earlier, Canfield was brought to the attention of a Drug Enforcement Administration investigator in August 2012 by a source who claimed Canfield distributed large amounts of bath salts around the Capital Region.

The source reported buying more than 3 kilograms of the drug from Canfield, with the drug then redistributed to others in the Albany area, according to the filing.

During the investigation, the investigator reviewed phone and email communications between the two, showing Canfield was aware the drugs were destined to be redistributed in the Capital Region.

Then, in January 2013, the source arraigned to pick up 50 grams of bath salts from Canfield for $500, making the trip to meet Canfield in New Haven, Conn. The source was accompanied by an undercover DEA agent, and the transaction was electronically monitored.

The indictment also contains a motion that Canfield forfeit two laptop computers allegedly used to help commit the crimes.

Canfield is represented by attorney Gene V. Primomo of the federal public defender’s office.

The case is being prosecuted by Wayne Myers of the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
