Some ski areas closing early
CAPITAL REGION Because of a forecast of high winds and thunderstorms, Jiminy Peak Ski Area in Hancock, Mass., will close at 4 p.m. today and not offer night skiing, the area announced today.
The mountain plans on reopening at 9 a.m. Thursday.
West Mountain Ski Area (793-6606) in Queensbury, which also offers night skiing, has not announced an early closing time. A representative from Maple Ski Ridge (381-4700) in Rotterdam said they are monitoring the weather forecast. Maple Ski Ridge will still hold its after-school lessons, which usually end in early evening, but a closing time of about 7 p.m. is possible.
Early closures affect many local school ski clubs. Shenendehowa High School, for example, today was forced to cancel its club's weekly trip to Jiminy Peak.
