Schoharie girls get defensive in 42-17 WAC Southern win

Emily Gaige fired in 18 points, and the Schoharie girls’ basketball team held Sharon Springs scoreless in the opening quarter in a 42-17 Western Athletic Conference Southern Division win Wednesday night.

Hannah Bowersox had 12 points for Schoharie (3-3, 6-5).

Abby Spagnola scored 14 points and Erica Chase added nine as Galway (6-3, 7-5) turned back Mayfield, 45-34, in a WAC Northern Division game.

Spagnola went 10-for-11 from the line. Kylie Manoogian and Jennifer Little led Mayfield with nine and eight points, respectively.

Lyndsey Wadsworth totaled 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists, and Northville (4-4, 5-6) reached the .500 mark in the Northern Division with a 49-27 triumph over St. Johnsville.

Kelly VanNostrand had 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists for Northville. Samantha Cleveland paced the Saints with 13 points.

Hannah Murphy scored seven of her 15 points in the third quarter to help Corinth break away in a 44-26 Adirondack League win over Warrensburg.

Erin Langworthy’s 17 points, which included a 10-for-10 effort from the foul line, were best for Warrensburg.

Boys

Dan Waldron notched 19 points, and Tyler Hayes and Shane Lyon both chipped in with 10 as Schuylerville beat Greenwich, 48-40, and remained perfect in the Wasaren League.

Schuylerville (8-0, 9-1) bounced back from an 11-5 first-quarter def-icit.

Colin Oswald scored 27 points for the Witches. Oswald sank eight three-point baskets, one shy of the Greenwich record.

John Hoin netted 19 points, Dean Gazelli scored 12 and Shawn McNeil had 10 as Stillwater (5-3, 7-4) defeated Granville, 63-40.

BH-BL unbeaten

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake recorded seven pins from the 132- through 182-pound weight classes and remained unbeaten in the Suburban Council with a 54-24 victory over Colonie.

Spartans’ 132-pounder Nolan Hale pinned in 30 seconds, and Joe Butler (138), Mike Danz (145), Matt Sterling (152), Jake Ashcraft (160), Jack Hatton (170) and Anthony Papa (182) also recorded falls. Tom Walsh (120) and Austin DiCerbo (285) notched pins for the Garnet Raiders.

Queensbury beat Foothills Council rival Glens Falls, 59-12, with Nico Mattia (99), Kody Bruno (126), Brian Stevens (138), Frankie Nassivera (170) and Ryan Brown (285) pinning for the Spartans.

Indoor track

Navin makes Millrose

Finishing the mile in 4:19.80 at the Millrose Time Trials at the Armory in New York City on Wednesday, Saratoga Springs’ Jay Navin became the fourth boy in the program’s history to qualify for the Millrose Games, which will take place Feb. 16 at the Armory.

Navin ran near the front of the pack throughout the race, finishing fifth.

“We’re very proud of Jay,” said Saratoga coach Art Kranick. “He had a great finish. He was in front the whole time. He did a great job.”

Hockey

Plainsmen win

Kyle Marr scored three goals and assisted on another as Shenendehowa beat Guilderland/Mohonasen, 12-0, in a Capital District High School Hockey League game.

Nick Quigley and Nick Hansen both scored twice, with Quigley assisting on two goals and Hansen one. The Plainsmen got goals from eight players and multi-point games from nine. The scored four goals in a 42-second span late in the second period.

Ben Farstad got the shutout with three saves as Shenendehowa outshot Guilderland/Mohonasen, 60-3.

At the other end of the ice, Ryan McCrum made 48 saves.
