Volunteer firefighters may be a case of ‘you get what you pay for’ Re Justin Mason’s Jan. 6 article, “Residents face cost to maintain 8 fire companies”: Mr. Mason did a good job reporting on how expensive new firehouses can be, [but] a few facts need to be clarified. The number of calls in Rotterdam is exaggerated: There are some where more than one fire department responds. So when two or three fire departments respond ...

Ruth Benacquista I know you liberals hate facts but here they are. The UK where there is an absolute gun ban.. Last year they were number 1 in violent crime in the world. They had 1,158,957 VIOLENT CRIME incidences last year, that is 2034 acts per 100,000 residence. The next 9 countries in the world with the highest acts of violent crime are,Austria, South Africa,Sweden, Belgium, Canada, Finland,Netherlands, Luxenburg and France. The United States is so far down the list of violent crime it's not worth mentioning. What makes us safe is guns..... You want to stop 60 percent of the violence? Close the borders, the South American gang members are creating much of it. Bring our soldiers home and let them patrol the borders and team up with local police in gang hotspots.

Ruth Benacquista-more simplistic platitudes. We are not going to rip up our Bill of Rights to appease the anti-gun corner. Would you be happier when knife deaths skyrocket? Too many on on the streets who need mental health care.

I know why gun sales are soaring. We have former Illionois Congressman (R) Joe Walsh ranting that we may need to shed blood to to "keep this great Republic". Then the CEO of Tactical Response, James Yager, in our faces stating he is ready to fire the first shot and start killing people. Is he the good guy or the bad guy of whom the NRA speaks? Anyway, I'm heading to the gun show, along with probably hundreds of others, to get some fire power to protect myself from these scary violent 2nd Amendment proponents. I'll bet a good percentage of the sales are people like me. I don't want to take your guns, but I do want to feel safe to exercise my 1st Amendment rights and live without fear of being shot at the mall. I don't feel so safe right now.

good for you Janesjoy. Buy a firearm. Be sure to sign up for a NRA Firearm safety course prior to buying any ammunition. You will have a solemn responsibility to be a safe firearms owner.

James Yager, CEO of Tactical Response, had his concealed carry permit taken away yesterday, by the state of Tennessee.
Which is as it should be.
I'm not anti gun, but when somebody is quite publicly ranting that he's about to shoot people, it would be irresponsible of them to let him keep it.

albright1 - already took the course back in the 1960s. I grew up with guns for sport and hunting. I shot skeet for years with my husband, a state champion and chief referree in the state where we lived at the time. Funny, I can't remember ever needing an assualt weapon or 30 clip magazine to hit those little clay birds.

Fritzdawg - Did they take away his assault weapons and ammo? I am not sure how easily you can conceal some of those. But, anyway, good for Tennessee.

well Janesjoy, if you already own weapons, why did you make a comment leading us to believe that were going to break ground and go get some "firepower"? I question your honesty.
