Takeover of Cobleskill business slated to create more jobs
COBLESKILL A friendly business takeover is leading to more jobs in the short term and possibly more later on if FindCo’s goals of expansion are realized.
The New Jersey-based FindCo LLC recently purchased Tel-Serv Business Solutions, and principals from both operations gathered at the Crossroads Barn Office complex in Cobleskill on Wednesday to celebrate.
Gordon Naess opened Tel-Serv Business Solutions in Schoharie nine years ago and moved it to Cobleskill 18 months ago but decided to sell the firm when he landed a national sales position with Stanley Black & Decker.
Naess said he’s kept the business open — he sees the seven employees as seven families — and earlier discussions with FindCo owner Charlie Anderson bore fruit Jan. 1.
“It could have stopped,” Naess said of the company.
Seven Tel-Serv employees will continue their work providing telemarketing sales services for businesses while the office expands to include services FindCo provides for the security, financial services, roadside assistance and web development industries.
Anderson, who opened the celebration with a prayer, said FindCo takes the place of costly marketing and sales departments and brings customers to businesses throughout the country.
FindCo has associates in New Jersey, Wisconsin, British Columbia and now New York.
FindCo signed a five-year lease on the office and plans software and equipment upgrades.
The office on Route 7 has enough space to fit 22 employees. Anderson hopes to have a more crowded office if a major account he’s pursuing works out.
Anderson, who opened FindCo in 2007, not long before recession gripped the U.S. economy, said he’s cautiously optimistic about the new opportunity. Business has remained challenging even after reports of economic recovery, he said.
The amount of time it takes to make a sale is longer than it used to be, so remaining profitable requires patience and consistency, he said: “You’ve got to keep at it.”
FindCo is currently looking to hire four additional workers in the sales and marketing fields.
Representatives from state, county and town governments, the Schoharie County Chamber of Commerce and the Fulton-Montgomery-Schoharie Workforce Solutions Center attended Wednesday’s event.
It included a traditional ribbon-cutting with a massive, homemade pair of scissors that have toured Schoharie County in celebrations of businesses opening back up after tropical storms Irene and Lee shut down business activity in 2011.
Assemblyman Pete Lopez, who has grown fond of that pair of scissors, said seeing them at a business expansion event is heartening.
“It’s wonderful to have new business and new jobs and new wealth in the community,” he said. “This is where we want to be, moving forward.”
