— Authorities say a 44-year-old man is hospitalized after shooting himself at the end of an eight-hour standoff at a Rensselaer County home.

State police say Keith Gates of Hoosick fired several shots from a long gun out the back of a home in the town of Hoosick around 10 a.m. Monday. Officials say when police arrived, he threatened to harm them and himself, and refused to leave the home.

State police crisis negotiators talked with Gates for several hours before robotic surveillance equipment sent into the residence located him in an upstairs bedroom. Police say he had shot himself in the head.

Gates was taken to an Albany hospital, where police say he’s in grave condition.

Troopers say police had been called to the home Sunday night for domestic disturbance.
