— A father and son are facing Buster’s Law charges for allegedly abusing a dog.

Officers responded to 16 Park Ave. on Wednesday for a report of a neighbor who heard fighting a woman screaming for help. John Ferrara Jr., 26, answered the door and appeared intoxicated to police officers. He allegedly was belligerent and verbally abusive. He told police that his sister got into an argument with her boyfriend and they both left. Officers asked to enter the apartment to check that everyone was fine and Ferrara refused, becoming increasingly irate, according to police.

John Ferrara Sr., 59, then appeared at the door. He was also not cooperating and yelling at police.

The officers requested backup and upon arrival of those officers, attempted to enter the apartment. Both men allegedly blocked their path. When inside, police found a German Shepherd that was in poor health and not moving in the living room. Cohoes Animal Control Officer Jerry Oliver responded and took the animal to the Capital District Animal Emergency Clinic. Staff members told police that the animal was emaciated, anemic, had penetrating ulcers on its body and that both of the animal’s rear hip bones were penetrating its skin and completely visible. The dog had to be euthanized.

Both men were charged with resisting arrest, obstruction of governmental administration and cruelty to animals (Buster’s Law). John Ferrara Sr. faces an additional charge of harassment.
