— An Albany man faces four to eight years in prison after pleading guilty Wednesday to arson.

Juan Atiles, 30, admitted in Albany County Court to starting a fire in his basement apartment on Crown Terrace on Oct. 7 of last year.

Before leaving the apartment, Atiles disabled the smoke detectors, knowing that other residents were in the apartment building at the time, according to a press release from Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares.

Atiles approached a police officer to tell him what he did. Smoke detectors in the hallway of the building had alerted other residents of the building to evacuate and the Albany Fire Department responded within minutes.

Atiles is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 5.

Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Cheryl Fowler prosecuted the case.>
