Shenendehowa junior Ryan Gordon will go after his second consecutive championship at the state swimming and diving meet Friday and Saturday at Webster Schroeder High School just outside of Rochester.

Gordon is the No. 2 seed in the 100-yard backstroke and also the leadoff man on the Plainsmen’s No. 2-seeded 200-yard medley relay. Gunnar Zemering of Bethlehem and Alex Dreisbach of Albany Academy have also earned top-10 individual swimming seeds.

Gordon won the New York State Public High School Athletic Association 100 back last year while setting a Section II record of 50.13 seconds. He also placed third in the Federation results, which includes all competing athletes.

Patrick Conaton of Fordham Prep was the second-place Federation finisher last year in the 100 back, and enters this weekend’s meet as the No. 1 seed (50.71) ahead of Gordon (50.80). Gordon is also the No. 6 seed in the 200 individual medley (1:56.32).

With the Section II-record 1:36.22 they set two weeks ago, Gordon, his brother Luke, Eric Tsui and Mike Conley are seeded second behind Pittsford (1:34.64) in the 200 medley relay. Shenendehowa is No. 5 in the 200 free relay (1:28.06), Niskayuna is No. 6 in the 400 free relay (3:14.40), and Shenendehowa is No. 8 (3:14.74) in that event.

“We’ve got a lot of relays, and relays score points,” said Schenectady coach Brian Melanson, who serves as the Section II swimming and diving coordinator. “That will be good for our section.”

Zemering is No. 4 (21.41) in the 50 free, and Dreisbach is No. 9 (47.57) in the 100 free. Shenendehowa diver Adam Bonk is No. 9 (510.40).

This year’s Section II roster of 34 includes 10 small-school athletes.

“I like our team,” said Melanson. “We always send a great group of kids out there.”

Swimming preliminaries are Friday, starting at noon. Swimming

finals are Saturday beginning at noon, and the diving will be contested at 3:30.
