Quick arrest made in Albany deli robbery

— A man allegedly robbed a deli at knifepoint Friday morning, but he didn’t get too far.

Police said a beat officer was flagged down moments after the robber left the store. The suspect was still within sight, and the officer was able to arrest him immediately.

The incident began at 10:45 a.m. at R&J Grocery and Deli, 277 Clinton Ave. Anwar Smickle, 29, of Albany, robbed the store at knifepoint, police said.

Witnesses flagged down officer Michael Fargione, who arrested Smickle.

Police said Smickle threatened Fargione with the knife when the officer approached.

He was taken into custody and charged with robbery, criminal possession of a weapon, menacing a police officer and resisting arrest.
