Sheriff’s canine sniffs out suspect
ROCK CITY FALLS Gunner, a Saratoga County Sheriff’s K9 unit dog, tracked an alleged jewelry thief for more than an hour Saturday before sniffing him out under a utility trailer.
Sheriff’s investigators went to the residence of Alfred A. Evans, 24, of 230 Emigh Road, Rock City Falls to question him about a recent jewelry theft from a home in Malta, but he jumped out his bedroom window and ran.
The state police were called in to help with the 70-minute manhunt, but it was Gunner who eventually found Evans hiding under a trailer on the same road.
In the process of getting the fugitive out from under the trailer, Gunner was injured, which was added to the list of charges.
Evans is charged with fourth and fifth degree possession of stolen property for allegedly selling $2,250 of stolen jewelry at Wilton Mall in early January and for carrying a gold bracelet, also stolen from the home in Malta when he was arrest Saturday. He’s also charged with resisting arrest and injuring a police animal.
Evans was arraigned and remanded to county jail.
