Area college basketball: Zajac, Engineers eliminate Dutchmen in Liberty semis

— Senior forward Jamie Zajac scored 20 points, and three other players scored in double figures as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute won for the eighth straight time by beating Union, 85-77, in the Liberty League tourn-ament semifinals Wednesday night at the Viniar Athletic Center.

Third-seeded RPI (17-9) plays at top seed Hobart in the championship game and an NCAA tourn-ament berth Saturday at 3 p.m.

The Dutchmen finish the season at 20-6, posting the sixth 20-win season in program history.

Brendan Farley and Daniel Martin scored 14 points for RPI.

Senior forward Keven Don­ohue, in the final game of his career, scored 24 points and was 11-for-13 at the line. Donohue finished with 1,499 career points, fifth on Union’s all-time list. Keith Callies led Union with 25 points.

GENEVA — Top-seeded Hobart knocked off the two-time defending Liberty League champion Thoroughbreds in the Liberty League tourn-ament semifinals at Bristol Gym.

Stefan Thompson scored 23 points, and both Joe Gibbons and Connor Rehbaum tallied 16 for the Statesmen (20-6), who avenged last year’s setback in the tournament championship game.

Tanner Brooks scored 22 points, and Aldin Medunjanin added 21 for the 15-11 Thoroughbreds.

WORCESTER, Mass. — Assumption closed the game on a 14-4 run to beat the Golden Knights at Laska Gym.

Dominykas Milka topped the 9-11, 12-12 Golden Knights with 23 points and eight rebounds.

Shenendehowa graduate Jose Reyes topped the 19-11 Vikings with 14 points and eight assists, while Brandon Dean came off the bench to score 12.

Greenwich graduate Dani DeGregory topped the 12-14 Thoroughbreds with 17 points.

WORCESTER, Mass. — Sparked by Gabrielle Gibson’s 31 points, Assumption rallied from a 27-26 halftime deficit to beat the Golden Knights in a Northeast-10 Conference game.

Assumption improved to 15-5 in the NE-10 and 18-6 overall. Gabie Polce and Nicole Bini each poured in 15 points, and Mariah Lesure added 13 for the 6-14, 9-15 Golden Knights.

HERKIMER — Despite Schen-ectady product Raeshelle Frasier’s 20th double-double of the season with 12 points and 16 rebounds, the Vikings lost to the 21-7 Generals.

Ashley Creighton (Catholic Central) scored 13 points, and Shaker grad Angelica Smith added 12 points and 11 rebounds for the 8-15 Vikings, who end their season today against SUNY-Delhi.
