— Police are looking for a man who claimed to be a member of the city’s Water Department to gain access into a residence.

At about 12:40 p.m., a man knocked on the door of an elderly resident in the 1500 block of California Avenue and claimed to be a city employee from the Water Department. The resident allowed him access to her home but became suspicious of the man. He fled the scene when confronted by the homeowner, according to a news release.

The Water Department did not have anyone working in that area during the time of the incident.

The suspect is described as a short white man wearing earrings. He was last seen wearing a black or dark blue jacket marked “Water Department” and a black or dark blue knit cap. The resident was not injured in this incident and no property was reported missing.

The Schenectady Police Department encourages all residents to use caution when allowing strangers who are seeking access to their home.
