Man, 21, dies in snowmobile crash in northern NY
CHAMPLAIN — State police say a 21-year-old man has been killed in a snowmobile accident near the Canadian border in northern New York.
Troopers tell WIRY-AM in Plattsburgh that Nicholas Roberts was driving his snowmobile across a cornfield near Route 9 in the Clinton County town of Champlain on Sunday when he hit a culvert at a high rate of speed. Police say the snowmobile flipped end over end several times, ejecting Roberts.
Police believe Roberts was wearing a helmet but the impact of the crash threw the helmet off his head. He was found at about 5:20 p.m. and taken to the Plattsburgh hospital, where he was pronounced dead about three hours after being found.
Champlain is in the New York's northeastern corner, 160 miles north of Albany.
