Colonie man charged with stabbing girlfriend, holding police at bay
Updated 6:14 p.m.
COLONIE Colonie police used tear gas to end a Friday night standoff in Colonie in which a man armed with a shotgun and knife barricaded himself inside a Consaul Road home.
Timothy Anatriello Jr., 24, of Consaul Road, was charged with second-degree assault, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, unlawful imprisonment, third-degree assault, second-degree reckless endangerment and menacing.
A woman, identified only as Anatriello's girlfriend, was taken to Albany Medical Center with three small stab wounds on her leg and bruises on her head.
Police were initially called to 89 Consaul Road about 8:30 p.m. responding to a report that a woman had been stabbed and that a man armed with a shotgun and knife was threatening to harm everyone in the residence.
Police say that while they were in the process of surrounding the house, Anatriello exited the residence, armed with a long gun, and ignored repeated commands to drop the weapon. When the man pointed the long gun at nearby officers, a patrol sergeant fired one shot at him, police say. That shot missed and he retreated into the house.
Shortly after, the Anatriello's father and girlfriend left the house. But police say Anatriello refused repeated commands to surrender and the Colonie Police Special Services Team (SWAT Team) responded to assist.
The girlfriend was transported by Colonie EMS to Albany Medical Center Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The father was not injured, police said.
Colonie Police negotiators unsuccessfully tried using telephone and a public address system to contact Anatriello. The Special Services Team then used tear gas, prompting Anatriello to surrender without further incident, police say. The Colonie Police Department was assisted by Colonie EMS, Midway Fire Department, New York State Police, Niskayuna Police and the Guilderland Police. The investigation is ongoing and more information will be released later in the day.
During the standoff, nearby residents were evacuated to the Midway Fire House or were advised to seek shelter in their basements. Consaul Road between New Karner Road and Watervliet-Shaker Road had to be closed for several hours, but is now open.
Anatriello is expected to be arraigned later this morning in Colonie Justice Court.
