Gazette features reporter wins statewide award
SCHENECTADY Karen Bjornland, a features reporter for The Daily Gazette, has won a statewide award for an article she wrote about the Washington County Fiber Tour and the proliferation of the fiber industry, and related farms, in Washington County.
The driving tour, held each April, educates visitors about animals and farms that produce fiber for yarn spinning and weaving.
Bjornland’s “Weaving a spell,” which ran April 21 in The Sunday Gazette, won the New York State Agricultural Society’s “Cap” Creal Journalism Award for a printed feature story.
The society’s awards luncheon will be Jan. 9 in Liverpool.
The award is named for Harold “Cap” Creal, a farmer, Ag Society member and assemblyman from 1930 to 1950.
The award is intended to inspire more coverage of the positive aspects of agriculture in New York state.
Bjornland has worked in the features department at The Gazette since 1990.
