— A state judge has fined a whitewater rafting company $25,000 for sending boats down the Hudson River in the Adirondack Mountains with an unlicensed guide after the judge told the outfitter to stop doing it.

Justice Richard Giardino has ordered Hudson River Rafting Co. owner Patrick Cunningham to pay $5,000 for each of five trips this summer on part of the Hudson where licensed guides are required by the state.

The outings with clients began in the hamlet of North River, where the Hudson’s rapids diminish and most whitewater trips end.

The outfitter argued the trips occurred mainly where no licensed guides are required.

Giardino cited Cunningham for contempt for disobeying his May order to use licensed guides where required.

A call to Cunningham’s attorney was not immediately returned Monday.
