Mary Ann Lake was a princess during the 1969 Christmas season.

Marge Garrow and Cindy Van Hoesen were flowers. John DeCarlo and Kathy Turck played mouse kings. They were all in “The Silver Nutcracker” at Schenectady’s Fulton School on Dec. 17 that year. Every Fulton student had a part in the show.

As Christmas 1969 approached, the Octavo Singers and Central Park Junior High School Glee Club also prepared for concerts. The Octavos were singing Handel’s “Messiah” during the height of the Christmas season for the first time.

Kids met Santa Claus and teens from Mont Pleasant High School’s Key Club purchased food for needy families. The Key crew purchased hams and other favorites and prepared 26 baskets of cheer.

Other people answered the bell for the holiday in another way — they donated to the Salvation Army.
