Cobleskill Stone Products honored for building race track
COBLESKILL After about 60 years in the business, paving a road or parking lot isn’t much of a challenge for Cobleskill Stone Products.
But a more complicated project it undertook is gaining a lot of notice from its peers. Two trade associations are lauding the company for the expertise that went into building the NY Safety Track — a new, two-mile race course in Delaware County that’s considered one of the most challenging in the East.
Cobleskill Stone Products last week announced the company earned two industry awards for its work building the track.
The company won the Hot Mix Asphalt Showcase Award from the New York Construction Materials Association and the Excellence in Construction Award from the Empire State Associated Builders and Contractors.
Opened in May, the NY Safety Track offers instruction in proper motorcycle riding, and the track itself is a critical element of the work, said co-owner Greg Lubinitsky.
The 2.14 mile course includes 18 turns along with elevated straightaways and a total of 450 feet in elevation changes.
“Not only are they pitching it left and right constantly, they’re also going up and down,” he said.
The construction work isn’t like that for a highway with a standard crown that helps water run off.
“Here, there can’t be a crown. It has to be at least 0.5 to 3 percent cambered and tilted. This is actually very difficult to do,” Lubinitsky said.
“There’s a lot to go in it,” said John Holmes, the attorney for Cobleskill Stone Products.
The company’s team had to develop the right mix for the track’s base layer and top layer and then make sure it was laid down properly.
It’s work that requires a focus not only on longevity but also on providing a smooth surface with a precise mix of asphalt and a polymer additive, Holmes said.
Cobleskill Stone Products owner Emil Galasso in a news release credited Boyle Excavating Inc. of Harpersfield for site preparation.
“I am very proud of our people who did an excellent job on this project,” he said in the release.
Cobleskill Stone Products employs as many as 200 people during the construction season.
