High schools: BH-BL pushes streak to 330 in volleyball
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake and Guilderland opened defense of their Suburban Council division championships with three-set sweeps Friday.
Kathleen Schurman collected eight kills, and sophomore Natalie Schurman had five kills and five aces in Burnt Hills’ 25-18, 25-10, 25-13 victory over Colonie.
Burnt Hills, the reigning North Division champion, extended its league win streak to 330 matches going back to the 1990 season. Taylor Bannister had five kills, and Casey Schreiner added 14 assists for Colonie.
Jess VanDoren paced Guilderland with five kills and 11 assists in a 25-16, 25-20, 25-22 triumph over Ballston Spa. Jen Hoffmann had six digs for the Lady Dutch, the 2012 SC South Division champions.
Jackie Kindlon delivered 12 kills, Samantha Larongo and Abby McClory combined for 11 kills and Averill Park topped Niskayuna, 25-23, 25-19, 25-20.
DeAnna Whittemore had nine kills for Niskayuna, Julia Wagner had six aces and four kills, and Lauren Litz totaled 16 assists.
Sophy Levine and Nina Peppel both produced five kills, and Colette Piasecki-Masters assisted on 17 points to lift Saratoga Springs over Bethlehem, 25-21, 25-22, 25-19.
Levine also had five blocks and Peppel served four aces. Gabby and Jenna Giacone led the Eagles with seven kills and six blocks, respectively.
Bree Nichols worked the net for 15 kills, Aimee Spilman amassed 38 assists, and both served five aces in Columbia’s 25-16, 25-17, 12-25, 25-21 win over Shaker. Sarah Jaromin
anchored the Blue Devils’ defense with 23 digs.
Aaron Carrk, John Sica and Kevin Mahar delivered seven kills apiece, Dan Ball had 22 assists and Brian Malson had 13 digs as Bethlehem beat Niskayuna, 25-15, 25-13, 25-10, for its 46th consecutive Suburban Council win.
Mahar had 13 assists, and Carrk served a trio of aces in the three-time defending Section II champions’ season debut.
Reid Hartl served four aces to go with 14 assists, and Scott Grable slugged down nine kills as Shenendehowa began its season with a 25-16, 25-10, 25-22 Suburban Council win over Saratoga Springs.
Kolin Krebs had five kills for the Plainsmen. Liam Stewart had five kills and five blocks for the Blue Streaks, Jake Sewell had four kills and four blocks, and Luc Cianfarani had eight assists.
Preston Hendrick had a goal and an assist, and Tyler Raymond made seven saves as Queensbury blanked Albany Academy, 3-0, at the Adirondack Shootout at the Morse Complex in Glens Falls.
Eric Paige and Cole Crotty had the other goals for Queensbury.
LaSalle beat Glens Falls, 1-0, in the other game, the goal coming from Nial Coughlin in overtime,
Liam O’Brian and Luis Rockwood notched second-half goals to send Christian Brothers Academy past Johnstown, 2-0, at the South Glens Falls Tournament.
Jose Mendoza and Cameron Reynolds had goals as Schuylerville edged the host Bulldogs, 2-1, in the other game at South Glens Falls.
