It was a rough night at the plate and on the mound for Philadelphia Phillies outfielder and Schenectady High School graduate Casper Wells against the Arizona Diamondbacks in an 18-inning game Saturday night and Sunday morning at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

Wells, who started the game in right field, went 0-for-7 at the plate with four strikeouts and seven runners left on base.

With the Phillies out of relief pitchers, Wells came on to pitch the 18th. He retired the first two batters. But the Diamondbacks got to him and took a 12-7 win in a game that lasted seven hours, six minutes. The game started at 7:06 p.m. Saturday and finished at 2:12 a.m. Sunday.

Wells walked Tony Campana. Adam Eaton then lined a double to left-center field to score Campana and give the Diamondbacks an 8-7 lead.

After Paul Goldschmidt was intentionally walked, Martin Prado hit an RBI single. A walk to Didi Gregorius loaded the bases.

Gerardo Parra followed with a two-run single to make it 11-7 and end Wells' night on the mound. Reserve infielder John McDonald, who was playing left field, replaced Wells, who went to right field while Darren Ruf moved from right to left.

Diamondbacks pitcher Trevor Cahill greeted McDonald with an RBI single.

Wells was charged with five runs on three hits. He walked three and didn't strike out a batter. Wells threw 40 pitches, 20 for strikes.

It's the second time Wells has pitched this season. While with the Chicago White Sox, Wells pitched an inning of scoreless relief against the Cleveland Indians in the first game of a June 28 double-header.
