Missing kayaker report deemed unfounded
MOREAU The Saratoga County Sheriff's Department and dive teams searched the Hudson River Friday for a kayaker reported in distress Thursday evening opposite Hudson Falls, but may call of the search if nothing is found Friday.
The sheriff's department received a 911 call about a kayaker in distress near the Fenimore Bridge about 7:10 p.m., but it's possible the person safely left the water, authorities acknowledge.
But early this afternoon, the sheriff's office said that, after investigating, it concluded that the report was unfounded.
A member of the South Glens Falls Police Department who responded Thursday night saw someone in a kayak go under the water and not reappear.
Deputies said a land search by deputies and fire and rescue personnel was unable to find anyone, and dive teams from the Corinth and South Glens Falls fire departments have been called in to continue the search. The Hudson Falls Fire Department also responded, deputies said.
The search was expected to continue through Friday, but it was uncertain whether it would continue into Saturday.
Saratoga County Undersheriff Michael T. Woodcock said no kayak has been found, and there have been no reports from surrounding communities of anyone missing. "Kayaks are extremely difficult to sink," he said.
It's possible, he acknowledged, that someone paddling a kayak returned to land and left the area without being aware a distress call had been placed. There was also no vehicle found in the area, he said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff's department at 885-6761.
