— Police have closed Carman Road to fix a major water main break.

The road is closed from the roundabout at Curry Road to the intersection with Fort Hunter Road. Workers hope to reopen it by 4 p.m., but police said drivers should avoid the area until further notice.

The break was discovered this morning, Rotterdam Supervisor Harry Buffardi said. At first, workers thought they could keep one lane of the busy road open, but they soon realized they had to dig up the middle of the road.

“It’s been leaking for awhile, so it undermined that spot,” Buffardi said. “We’ve got it all dug out and pumped the water out.”

Now workers must patch the pipe and then fill in the hole so that they can reopen the road for rush hour traffic.

“It’s not a complicated break, but they have to dig up the highway,” Buffardi said.

The break is approximately in front of Towne TV.
