— The region’s unemployment rate fell sharply this summer, according to the state Labor Department.

In the Capital Region, the rate was 6.4 percent in July. This compares to 7.9 percent in July 2012.

That means the job market is stronger in the Capital Region than in the rest of the state. Statewide unemployment in July 2013 was 7.5 percent.

Saratoga County had the second-lowest unemployment rate in the entire state, 5.6 percent. Montgomery County had the fifth-highest rate, 8.7 percent.

New York City still leads the state’s in unemployment. Bronx County posted an unemployment rate of 11.9 percent, the highest in the state.

Hamilton County, with its traditional strong summer tourism economy, had the lowest unemployment rate in the state in July, 4.2 percent.

The Department of Labor determined the rates by following procedures set by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The rate is partially based on a telephone survey of 3,100 of the more than 7 million households in the state.
