Loss knocks ValleyCats out of first place
TROY Ryon Healy and B.J. Boyd both homered off Tri-City starter Tanner Bashue Monday night as the Vermont Lake Monsters rolled over the ValleyCats, 7-2, in a New York-Penn League game at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.
Coupled with Lowell’s 6-2 victory over Connecticut, the ValleyCats (35-25) dropped out of first place in the Stedler Division.
The Lake Monsters wasted no time getting to Bushue, who dropped to 3-4. After Herschel Powell grounded out to start the game, Boyd singled and Healy followed with his home run to left field.
Boyd then smashed his seventh home run of the year, driving in Josh Miller and Powell, to highlight a four-run second inning that gave the Lake Monsters a 6-0 lead. and ended Bushue’s night.
Tri-City struggled to get its offense going against Vermont starter Kyle Finnegan and relievers Bobby Wahl and Junior Mendez. The ’Cats got a run back in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Adam Nelubowich, but didn’t score again until the bottom of the seventh, when Ryan Dineen singled in James Ramsay.
The VallyCats were held to seven hits — six singles and Ramsay’s double in the seventh inning.
The teams will play again tonight at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium at 7 and then head to Vermont for two games to conclude their home-and-home series.
