Foul was part of the fair on Monday, Aug. 11, 1980.

Rain and cloudy skies marked the beginning of the Altamont Fair. People and farm animals still showed up, the merry-go-round still ran and sausage and peppers still sizzled.

Mary Browne and Laura Panas were among the stars at the annual fair sponsored by Albany, Greene and Schenectady counties. The women dressed in Colonial-style clothing as volunteers at the fair’s farm museum. Antique agricultural equipment was on display, some of it operational.

Stowe Burke, 8, of Saratoga Springs, met a Clydesdale mare. Jeff Bennett met a challenge — taking a spin inside the fair’s revolving fun house. So while there was rain, folks were still in fair moods.

This year’s edition of the fair begins Tuesday.
