— The Stockade Inn is expanding — but not in the traditional sense.

Instead, inn owner Jeff McDonald wants to renovate a building across the street, giving him an additional 11 or 12 rooms to rent when the 18 rooms in his hotel fill up.

The inn fills up rapidly for weddings and other events, McDonald said. But he could not simply buy another building — his hotel offers historic rooms in a historic mansion, and he wanted to offer more of the same.

“I think we offer a really unique product with a historic building,” he said. “We offer a real nice alternative to a chain.”

He plans to ask the Planning Commission next month for a zoning change so that he can turn the former Knights of Columbus building into a historic hotel.

The McDonald family bought the vacant building several years ago. It is on the corner of S. Church Street.

“We were trying to figure out the best use for the building,” McDonald said. “It would be a great historic hotel.”

He got permission from the Board of Zoning Appeals for 11 to 12 hotel rooms. Now he has to convince the Planning Commission that a 4,000-square-foot building should not be zoned as a single-family house.

He’s hoping to get permission for a rezoning by October so he can start renovations this winter.

“It needs a lot of work,” he said. “There’s historic moldings we’ll salvage inside.”

There’s no working kitchen or bathroom in the building, and all of the electrical, plumbing and mechanical services need to be replaced.

The Planning Commission will consider the proposal Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
