New site sought for Clifton Park animal shelter annex
CLIFTON PARK The cat adoption storefront at the Clifton Park Center mall will be closing, but those who run it hope to find another space in the Clifton Park-Halfmoon area.
The annex of the Saratoga County Animal Shelter has occupied a space between Boscov’s and the mall’s food court rent-free for the last four years.
DCG Development, which owns the mall, cautioned in early 2012 that the shelter annex would eventually have to vacate for a paying tenant, and mall management recently asked that the annex be vacated by Aug. 10.
The facility has been run by a volunteer group called Homes for Orphaned Pets Exist (HOPE), providing for up to 40 cats that are brought from the county animal shelter in Milton.
HOPE estimates 2,200 animals have been adopted into new homes since the facility opened in the mall space in 2009.
“It’s been awesome,” said HOPE coordinator Terri Cook of Ballston Lake.
The group was notified late Monday that the mall now has a paying tenant for the space.
The annex, staffed entirely by volunteers, opened in the mall in September 2009, and hasn’t had to pay rent or utilities. Cook said they’ve been reminded from time to time that the arrangement wasn’t permanent, but she said the annex brought significant foot traffic into the mall.
“There’s nowhere else in the Capital Region that has had so many adoptions,” she said.
Cook estimated about 2,200 animals — nearly all of them cats — have been adopted from the annex.
Shelters that take cats are generally full this time of year because it’s kitten season, Cook said.
She hopes to find another space in the area, but said she’s had no luck thus far.
