— The Schenectady man who accidentally shot himself in the groin with a gun that had been tucked into his waistband is now facing weapons charges.

It turns out the gun was stolen from North Carolina, police said.

Joseph A. Hewitt, 21, has been charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property. Even if the gun had not been stolen property, police said it would have been illegal for Hewitt to carry it as he has previously been convicted of a crime.

The shot happened Friday night at the Imperial Motel on State Street in Schenectady. Police received a report of a shooting just before 8 p.m., and when they arrived found Hewitt suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His injuries were not considered life-threatening, and he was taken to Albany Medical Center for treatment.

His medical condition is currently unknown.

Maybe, according to Kathleen Moore, he should have exchanged some of his food stamps and purchased a holster with the cash. Cause you cannot buy a holster with Food Stamps and he really needed one. Poor guy.
