— A high-speed, rush-hour crash shut down a Northway exit for most of the day Tuesday.

State police spokesman Mark Cepiel said the accident happened before 8 a.m., when a cement truck heading south near exit 9W changed lanes.

“It got caught up with a van,” he said. “The two of them became entangled and went off the inside shoulder of the roadway.”

The van was trapped against the guard rail on the inside shoulder of the highway, Cepiel said, but the driver of the cement truck managed to pull away. The driver over-corrected, however, he said, veering back across all three lanes of traffic and overturning on the other shoulder.

The truck fell on its side and slid into the ramp for Exit 9W, Cepiel said.

“Two-thirds of the exit was blocked,” he said.

The highway itself was never closed, but the exit couldn’t be opened until the truck was removed. That took most of the day.

No injuries were reported, and the crash did not cause any environmental hazards, Cepiel added. He did not identify either driver.

State police are still investigating to determine the cause of the accident and have not said whether they will ticket either driver.
