Albany man sentenced for kidnapping, sexual abuse

— An Albany man was sentenced Tuesday to 25 years to life in state prison after being convicted in February for kidnapping and sexually abusing a woman last May.

On May 2, 47-year-old Yaqoob Chauhan restrained a woman who is known to him for a period of more than 12 hours and subjected her to physical injury and sexual abuse while at an Elk Street residence in Albany. These actions were committed in the presence of five children under 11 years of age.

Chauhan was convicted of two counts of felony sexual assault, one count of felony kidnapping and five misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

He received 25 years to life for one count of predatory sexual assault. In addition, Judge Thomas A. Breslin also sentenced Chauhan to concurrent sentences of 15 years to life for the second count of predatory sexual assault, 20 years to life on the kidnapping count and 1 year in state prison for the endangering the welfare of a child counts.

Special Victims Unit Bureau Chief Shannon Sarfoh prosecuted this case.
