Man accused of robbing couple in parking lot at Wilton McDonald's
WILTON A Saratoga Springs man who allegedly robbed a couple in their car behind the Wilton McDonald’s has been tracked down and arrested.
State police say John L. Zippo, 44, of Maple Avenue, met a man and his girlfriend Friday afternoon in the parking lot behind McDonald’s on Route 50 to conduct a private sale of electronics. During the exchange, however, troopers said he displayed a knife and demanded the man’s money and cellphone, all the while threatening to harm his girlfriend.
Zippo then fled on foot with the cellphone and several hundred dollars in cash to a vehicle parked near Hannaford, according to troopers.
No one was injured, and the victim was able to provide police with a description of the vehicle and a partial registration number. When Zippo returned to his home later that evening, police were waiting to take him into custody, recovering some of the stolen property, they said.
Zippo was charged with first-degree robbery, a class B felony. He was arraigned in Wilton Town Court and sent to the Saratoga County jail with no bail.
The state Division of Parole assisted with the investigation.
